I was arrested for the first time in my adult life, a month ago for a hot check. I go to court next week and I'm not sure what my options are. I can't prove I didn't write the check, I don't have the money to pay the check and fines before my court date. I don't have an attorney and I got fired from my job the day after I was arrested. Since this is my first offense and the check was for $350, what should i expect?
Answer
If it was Harris County, the state would be willing to dismiss the case if you paid the check and charges in full. They will usually give a couple of settings. You do not even have to have a lawyer and can deal directly with the prosecutor. Be sure to look at the check to see if indeed it is your signature.
