Did Andy Kaufman fake his death May 16 1984?
Andy Kaufman succumbed to cancer on May 16, 1984.
Andy used to fake feuds with famous personalities, most famously with professional wrestler Jerry Lawler just because he thought it was funny. More importantly, Andy never would tell anyone his behavior was a prank, even after the prank was over. He loved it when people believed his off-beat humor to be real.

He even pretended to be terrible lounge singer, Tony Clifton, with such conviction that he had ABC pay Tony to appear on Kaufman's series, TAXI, as a guest star, separate from Kaufman's normal show salary. He showed up dressed as Clifton, and started to badmouth himself (Andy)! He got to the point where the show's producers fired Clifton for his outrageous behavior. Clifton stormed off of the set with some choice words for the producers - and Andy - only to return as Andy feigning innocence and apologizing for getting them to hire Clifton. He never ever admitted that he was Clifton during the show or in his stage act, and always behaved as if they were two different people.

Because of his commitment to his performance art style of comedy, people thought and hoped that his death was actually another prank, but sadly his death was real.
