Question

Hello. This past spring my sister asked me to co-sign a lease for an apartment. I filled out the application, but never actually signed the lease. She is now on the verge of being evicted. I asked the management company for a copy of the lease. There are several names listed in the body of the lease as co-signers that have been struck out, except mine. However, I never actually signed the lease. What are my rights when the management company comes after me or tries to list the debt on my credit report.

Thank you for you time.

Answer

Based upon what you described, your sister asked you to cosign her lease, but you didn't. However, if you filled out a credit application, it might make you liable for your sister's later dated lease, even without you signing the lease. If you signed a credit application, read it very carefully, or have an attorney examine it for you.

Good luck
