Can you shift from 4 wheel low to 2 wheel high on the fly the puropse being to start a heavy load?

Can you shift from 4 wheel low to 2 wheel high on the fly the puropse being to start a heavy load?
This depends entirely on the vehicle.
My Land Cruiser specifically recommends not doing this
My Dodge pick up does not mind.
