Question

I bought a car from a random person on Craigslist, and didn't realize that the name on the title was different than the sellers. The person whose name was on the title signed over the car to the person who sold me the car, but the seller was supposed to first register it on his own name before selling it. I don't know any of these guys and can't get in contact with them. The title is from out of state. and the car is not reported stolen. Can I get the rights to own this car in small claims court ?

Answer

If the title from the other State is signed by the original owner and passed to you, why not just have the title reissued in the other State? If not, then it sounds like you may need to be in Circuit Court as an equity court to have the title transferred to you. It may actually cost more than the car itself to pursue this. Speak to an attorney about your rights.
