Question

I have a misdeanor charge for accidentally breaking a window on an bus after a short argument with the driver. I am trying to avoid jail, as I am not a repeat offender

(this is my first arrest as an adult). I have no money to hire a lawyer and will use a public defender. Please give me some advice.

Answer

OK. Advice: tell your Deputy Public Defender the truth, the whole truth, and then rely on his/her judgement and expertise in handling this matter. Public Defenders are usually extremely able counsel. They know the judges, the prosecutors, even the local jury temperaments. You are very likely going to be in skilled and accomplished hands. Good luck.
